Avoiding Scams
Last updated 2026-07-19
Backten is a venue only — we never touch the money or the animal. Everyone's real protection is doing these things every time.
The one rule that matters most
Never send a deposit or payment before you have seen the animal — in person or via a live video call. Photos and even videos can be reused from someone else’s listing. A live video call where the seller shows the actual animal on request is much harder to fake.
Red flags
- Asks for a deposit or downpayment before you've seen the animal or done a video call.
- Refuses a video call, or only sends photos that look like stock images.
- Price is far below market — if it looks too good to be true, it probably is.
- Pressures you to pay quickly because "another buyer is waiting."
- Refuses to share an exact location or won't meet at the farm/palengke.
- New account, no rating, no completed sales — not automatically a scammer, but verify carefully.
- Asks for payment to a personal GCash number that doesn't match their profile name.
Before you pay
- Check the seller’s ✓ KYC-verified badge, rating, and completed-sales count.
- Ask questions in Backten chat — it’s logged, which matters if something goes wrong later.
- Inspect the animal in person, or at minimum do a live video call, before paying anything.
- Prefer cash or GCash on pickup over any advance payment.
- Get the deal terms (price, quantity, schedule) recorded as a Backten order — not just a verbal chat agreement.
If something goes wrong
Report the listing or user immediately (button available on every listing, profile, and chat thread) — fraud reports get same-day review. You can also generate an Evidence Export (your chat log, the listing snapshot, and the counterparty’s verified-identity attestation) to support a Barangay complaint. Backten is not a party to your dispute and cannot recover money already sent off-platform — but the evidence trail exists specifically so you can pursue recourse yourself.
Backten’s part
Every account completes identity verification before transacting. Every chat, listing, and report is logged. We review S1 fraud reports the same day. None of this replaces your own judgment — it exists to make bad actors easier to catch, not to make trust automatic.
